The initiative for this ebook on the North Sea and the Environment was taken by ICOE to provide an authoritative reference source for oil industry, practitioners, regulatory authorities, educational and research institutions worldwide faced with similar types of development and environmental problems. The ebook collates and records the invaluable knowledge gained from offshore developments, not only as an historical account, but also to ensure coverage of current environmental planning for the North Sea and the latest technological advances in environmental management. The nature and extent of research and application is unparalleled, the development of the North Sea in particular being coincident with the unleashing of the worldwide concern about environmental protection and resource conservation. This research necessitated a unique combination of the requirements of industry and the environment and provided a seed bed for the understanding of environmental issues. Three years of detailed research and production have been required to synthesise the experience of many experts across the wide spectrum of onshore and offshore environmental activities. 5 Section Editors and 38 Authors with backgrounds in industry, government, academia and consultancy were especially invited by ICOE for their direct involvement in and contributions to environmental analysis, audit and monitoring studies associated with exploration, construction and operations in North Sea oil and gas development.
