Book description

With the upsurge demand for textile products, the textile industry and its waste water has been increasing proportionally making it one of the main sources of severe pollution problems worldwide. Considerable attention has been given to evaluating the fate of azo dyes during waste water treatment which is a concern due to coloration of natural waters and their toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. Electrochemical destruction (Jia et al.,1999), photocatalysis (Davis et al.,1994) and absorption (Vandevivere et al.,1998), though effective as tertiary treatments, are not economically viable. While physical and chemical treatments of waste water combined with conventional aerobic biological treatment, are effective but may generate significant amounts of chemical sludge whose disposal in a secure landfill increases process cost, thus leaving behind a challenging task of solving this problem - "How can one treat waste water through a techno-economically viable option?". This work explores this question in detail providing a Cost effective approach for Degradation of an Azo Dye, Direct Blue 71.
