Book description

Dhaka is the Capital of independent Bangladesh and a fast growing city in the world. Dhaka city became the capital of the independent state of Bangladesh in 1971. This additional factor as well as the initiatives of private sectors led to Dhaka s phenomenal growth since 1971. The growth outward, following the pattern set by the Mughal founders has been limited by the waterways surrounding the city. With increased population pressure the highland spreading northward were occupied and built up. According to census of Bangladesh, 2001 the total area of Statistical Metropolitan Area (SMA) is 155.4 Sq mile. In the British period there are only 5.47% area were used for settlements.
