Book description

Giant cell is defined as an abnormally large tissue cell that often contains more than one nucleus and may appear as a merger of several normal cells. First described by Johannes Muller in 1838. Giant cells under H& E stained section has a pale pink cytoplasm with indistinct cell boundary. Giant cells can by physiological and pathological. macrophages are said to be precursors of giant cells. Physiological giant cells are megakaryocytes, osteoclasts and trophoblastic cells in the placenta. Pathologic giant cells are foreign body giant cells, Lang Hans giant cells, Aachoff's, foamy and Dorothy Reed cells.
