The possibility to establish a direct communication and control channel between the human brain and computers or robots was a topic of scientific speculation for many years. Research in this area has undergone an explosive growth in recent years using a variety of brain signals, signal features and translational algorithms. Successful operation of the system depends on the interaction of two adaptive controllers: the user, who creates specific brain signals that encode intent and the BCI that translates these signals into output that accomplishes the user's intent. BCI can enable a person suffering from paralysis to write a book or control a motorized wheelchair or prosthetic limb through thought alone.
