Romania - Honorary Guest of the Warsaw Book Fair
(23-26 May, 2019)

You are warmly invited to join in celebrating the Romanian literature and culture under the auspices of the Warsaw Book Fair!

Being nominated a Guest of Honour of the four-day annual event hosted in Warsaw, in the year that marks the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Romanian-Polish diplomatic relations (1919/2019) and the Presidency of Romania of the EU Council, provides endless opportunities to display and share glimpses of a rich culture seen through the force and diversity of its literature.

Last years have brought on the Polish book market an impressive number of translations from Romanian, completed and enriched by essays and non-fiction narratives of Polish authors. The Polish publishing houses, having launched whole series dedicated to Romanian authors, together with the passionate, enthusiast and dedicated, although small, group of translators, will continue to fascinate the public with true literary jewels. Romanian writers, nominated to or winners of the important Polish literary awards (Literacka Nagroda Europy Środkowej „Angelus” and Nagroda Europejski Poeta Wolności) will be in Warsaw for these four days in May to meet their Polish public.

We invite you to come along and take part in a rich and attractive programme specially put together for this fair: meetings with Romanian authors, such as Varujan Vosganian, laureate of Nagrody Europy Środkowej „Angelus” 2016 for Księga szeptów or Adrian Cioroianu, author of the sensational collection of stories Piękna opowieść o historii Rumunów, debates dedicated to the art&craft of translation, featuring the most active and appreciated translators, and to Eugen Ionescu, the Romanian-French well-known figure of the avant-garde theatre and his first Memoires, recently published in Polish, book launchings, screenings of feature and short films, creative workshops for children accompanied by Romanian cartoons. The Fair will also be the host of three Romanian exhibitions: Transylvania seen by Polish photographers, Comics from Romania and a collection of book illustrations. In the last day of the Fair (Sunday, 26 of May) we will welcome the classical music lovers at the Palace on the Isle in Łazienki Park, for a Romanian concert.

There is a piece of Romania you will take with you when visiting our stand, not only through the books we offer but also through the wide array of printed information about the Romanian culture (literature, cinema, cuisine) and the symbolic gifts, sweet or not, we have prepared for this occasion.

The stand and the events have been organized by the Romanian Cultural Institute in Warsaw, the Embassy of Romania in Poland and the Ministry of Culture and National Identity.
